How to Make a BUTTERFINGER® Cake Using Boxed Cake Mix

This post is sponsored by Ferrero, however all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

One of my all-time favorite things to do when I have some spare time, is whip up a cake from a boxed mix and doctor it up to create something special! I just love to take something ordinary and turn it into something unexpected. And in celebration of one of my all time favorite people, who just so happens to love a certain crispety, crunchety, peanut-buttery candy bar, I decided to experiment with a vanilla box cake and some Butterfinger® Fun Size bars from Walmart! The end result? DELICIOUS!

THE MIX

For this cake I started with a basic French Vanilla Box Mix as the base. I recommend using a box cake that doesn’t have a super overwhelming flavor. This really lends well to adding in new flavors and ensuring that they come through.

ALTERATIONS

To start, rather than preparing the cake based on the instructions, I make a few small alterations to ensure a more flavorful and moist cake. These are only suggestions and not required but I have found them to be fairly tried and true methods to making your cake taste homemade or bakery bought!

  1. Add 2 extra eggs.

  2. Substitute the oil for melted butter.

  3. Substitute the water for milk.

ADDITIONS

Now there are tons of flavor additions that you can make to a box cake. But for this particular one I really wanted to bring out everything awesome about Butterfinger® Fun Size bars! So we added in a few things!

  1. 1/2 Cup Peanut Butter

  2. 5 crushed Butterfinger® Fun Size bars

Mix the additions in to the prepared batter well and place into your favorite cake pans. For this cake I used three 6" pans.

Another great tip, is when you are dusting your pans to prevent your cake from sticking, spray them with nonstick oil and then coat them with sugar. This will keep the cakes from sticking to the pan while also creating a delicious and slightly crunchy crust to the outside!

Finally bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes!

*Tip: Crush Butterfinger® Fun Size bars with the flat side of a meat tenderizer or a rolling pin while in their wrappers.

BUTTERFINGER BUTTERCREAM

I chose to frost this cake with a Butterfinger buttercream that I made using my Simple Buttercream Frosting Recipe. In order to change the original recipe I added a teaspoon of heavy cream, 2 heaping tablespoons of peanut butter, and 2 crushed Butterfinger® Fun Size bars. Just whip it up and use in between the three layers as well as on the outside. I chose to also place one crushed candy bar between each layer and one to dust the top of the cake!

BUTTERFINGER BRITTLE

Another fun way that I decided to use the Butterfinger® Fun Size bars was to melt them down to create a Butterfinger Brittle! Simply crush up 3 Butterfinger® Fun Size bars and add 1/2 cup chocolate chips to a metal bowl. Place the bowl over a pan containing about 3 inches of boiling water. Stir constantly until everything is melted together. Then spread the melted candy mixture onto a flat metal pan, cover with wax paper and press flat with an additional pan. Place in the refrigerator to cool and harden. Lastly, cut into triangle shapes to decorate the top of your cake.

*Tip: keep brittle in the refrigerator until ready to decorate and place cake back in refrigerator until ready to serve!

Well, there you have it! A crispety, crunchety, peanut-buttery Butterfinger® cake that is perfect for any event. And don’t forget, you can purchase your Butterfinger® Fun Size bars at your local Walmart location!
